Shaun Sharpe PhD Research Scientist, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

Shaun M. Sharpe is a new Research Scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Saskatoon, SK. His research is focused in weed management considerations for economically important Canadian Prairie crops. His primary research interests are weed ecology, herbicides, and precision technology. Topics uniting those interests, such as remote sensing and precision spraying for biovigilance considerations are of particular interest. Such topics include utilizing machine vision in detecting and assessing threats to crop protection, executing mitigation strategies, and assessing the appropriateness of mitigation.

He aims to develop such techniques in support of Canadian producers to both reduce input costs and manage problems such as herbicide resistance. In 2008, Shaun received his Master of Science degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS. During this time, he worked with ground-based hyperspectral technology for weed detection and yield prediction in wild blueberry production. In 2017, Shaun received his doctoral degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, then continued as a Postdoctoral Associate at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, in Balm, FL. During his postdoc, he developed machine vision weed detection systems using artificial intelligence and tested various applications of a prototype precision spot sprayer. Besides professional interests, he does have an interest in visiting the natural areas and parks in Saskatchewan and the prairies.
