Derek graduated with a BSc in Biology from the University of Regina in 2012, followed by a MSc in Agrobiotechnology from Justus-Liebig-Universitӓt Gieβen (University of Giessen, Germany) in 2015. He now works in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan and has been involved in three research projects (AGILE, EVOLVES and P2IRC) working with lentil (Lens culinaris).
